Physics alive - Applications & Risks in EM Spectrum

Research on how different parts of the Electromagnetic Spectrum may have

  • applications or potential risks in their use or existence (especially unusual or uncommon ones)
Radio waves Microwaves Infra-red rays

Visible light e.g. laser

Ultra violet rays X-rays Gamma rays

Instructions:

  • Each student is to post at least ONE application/potential risk of any part of the EM spectrum under any category above.
  • Your contribution should be different from earlier posts in the same category.
  • It should consist of a summary of the applications or risks and a reference URL from one or more reliable sources.
  • Please post your contributions latest by Wed 19 February to be awarded 1 mark (of 10 marks in alternate assessment).
  • Reliability of online sources:
  1. Not recommended: E.g. http://www.darvill.clara.net/emag/index.htm This site has very basic information likely for educational purpose. Authors unknown.
  2. Recommended:
Laser light have potential hazards for human eyes if not used properly. There are differences in laser pointers in terms of the power of laser light emitted, and they are classified into class 1, 2, 3a, 3b and 4. Powerful sources of laser (more than 100 mW) are controlled items and users need to apply for licences to possess and use them.
